Closing of Another Chapter

Well guys, it’s about that time when the semester starts to wind down. The clubs had a great semester even though the weather got the best of us many times, but our teams pushed through it. The months of March and April were busy months.  In March, Disc Golf competed in the Gateway Collegiate Classic and took first place. Fencing Club hosted their first tournament in a very long time and had a terrific turnout. Club members Cameron Koch and Daniel Faller finished in 3rd place in epee and foil respectively. Women’s Ultimate hosted ther first home tournament,  ”SHEnanigan Showdown”. Also, Women’s Ultimate competed in “Flava Fest 2013″ and placed 2nd. Chris Bidwell from BJJ/Judo club placed 2nd in the “2013 O.J. Helvey Kentucky State Judo Championship”.  In April, Women’s Volleyball hosted the ”Thrill on the Hill” Tournament and placed 2nd overall. Men’s Rugby had 2 great wins  at home against Murray State University and Richmond Men’s Club.

We had a great turnout at the banquet, good food and good times. Thanks to everyone who joined us. Congrats to all of our award winners this year: Newcomer of the year Wilson Seremani from Men’s Rugby, Athlete of the year Chris Bidwell from Fencing and BJJ/Judo, Executive of the year Lauren Jones from Badminton, Community members of the year Women’s Rugby, Club of the Year Women’s Ultimate.

Thanks to all our clubs for a great semester. We are looking forward to the Fall!!

On March 8th, the Badminton Club will host an open tournament for all WKU students, faculty, and staff free of charge!  The event will start at 4pm on courts 2 and 5 of the Preston Center.  The Women’s Rugby Club will be hosting a home tournament, “SHEnanigan Showdown,” the weekend of March 23rd and 24th.  This will be their first home tournament, so we are very excited for them!  To round out the month, the Fencing Club will host the “Big Red Open” on the 30th.  Be sure to come out this month and show your support for WKU Sport Clubs!  Good luck to all our clubs!

We’re Back!

Hello Topper fans! Since our last post WKU Sport Clubs have been very active! I hope everyone is having a great semester. To start us off let’s talk about our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club. On September 17, 2011 the club traveled to the Extreme Grappling Open in Buckner, Kentucky where the two competitors from WKU swept the competition. Russell Whatley dominated the GI Division at middle weight by taking the gold medal. Then Whatley took gold in the no-GI division by winning the belt in the light heavy weight intermediate division where he was fighting out of his weight class. Travis Poulton followed with the same success when he won the gold medal in the middle weight blue belt division. Soon after that the Field Hockey club team traveled to Vanderbilt University on September 18, 2011 for a tournament where they won first place!

Then a few weeks later on the weekend of October 1-2, 2011 our Disc Golf club made a trip to the South East Collegiate Open where they placed 5th out of 20 other schools and are currently 10th in the country! During the same weekend our Field Hockey club made more news when they hosted their second annual tournament raising money for the Center for Courageous Kids.

Last weekend was Halloween weekend and our Men’s Ultimate Frisbee Club hosted their annual tournament where they were undefeated. Since the tournament was held the weekend before Halloween many players on the field were dressed to impress in a variety of costumes while club President Ian Mack sold T-Shirts and discs to raise money for the club.

This weekend both our Men’s and Women’s Ruby Club teams will be hosting home games. Women’s Rugby will be playing the Nashville Women’s Rugby Club at 12:00 PM and at 1:00 PM Men’s Rugby will be taking on Eastern Kentucky University. So we hope to see you out at the Hattie L. Preston Intramural Sports Complex cheering on your Hilltoppers…Go Tops!
